Q and A for Jason Heaton

    Hey Gang,

Hopefully you have seen the announcement that North American Director, Mike Pearson is hosting an event at TimeScape in Minneapolis on January 30th. In attendance will be special guest, Jason Heaton, who writes for Hodinkee, Gear Patrol. He is also an avid Scuba diver and routinely sports a Bremont S2000 .

Now I know that most of us aren't in the position to attend Thursday's event, but thankfully Mike has kindly offered to pass along any questions that we might have for Jason. If you have anything you'd like to run by him, please post it here and we will get it answered!

    Thanks!

    I've got a few Q's:

    1. When were you first exposed to Bremont and what was your first impression?

    2. We know you love your S2000, but do you own any more Bremont watches? If not, which of the current interests you most?

    3. We are currently running a poll for the best Bremont Rotor design to-date. Whats your vote?

    4. What would you like to see from Bremont in 2014?

And here are the responses from Jason. Thanks to Mike and Jason for getting us the answers.

ALT: When were you first exposed to Bremont and what was your first impression?

JH: Though I had earlier seen Bremont’s pilot’s watches on Web forums, it wasn’t until I received a Supermarine 500 sample watch to review for Hodinkee in summer of 2010. I spent a week with it and took it diving in a very cold lake and I recall being quite taken with it. It balanced a certain refinement with ruggedness that I hadn’t seen with any of the Swiss or Japanese divers I had tried to date. My rather meager review from three and half years ago can be found here:

B]ALT[/B]: We know you love your S2000, but do you own any more Bremont watches? If not, which of the current interests you most?

JH: Funny you should ask… Up until last night, I did not own another Bremont besides my S2000. I was fairly certain that I was going to one day pick up an MBII orange (like everyone else) but realized that under its skin it’s essentially the same timepiece as my S2000. What I lacked was a chronograph. Of the pilot’s range, I was always drawn to the ALT1-Z with its dynamic dial, touch of color and the added complication of the GMT hand. So when decision time came, that’s what I went with for my second Bremont. Incidentally, my wife, Gishani, who handles the watch photography for Gear Patrol, fell in love with the SOLO-37 so we both ended up with new Bremonts on the same night. A little poorer, a little richer.

B]ALT[/B]: We are currently running a poll for the best Bremont Rotor design to-date. Whats your vote?

JH: I’ve got to go with the Codebreaker, with the Victory as a close second. I’m a big Bletchley geek (when I worked as a technical writer in the ‘90s, I once wrote a guidebook to decrypt the code names given to machinery parts and subtitled it, “Notes From Bletchley”) so that has obvious appeal.

B]ALT[/B]: What would you like to see from Bremont in 2014?

JH: I’d like to see further enhancement of existing watches - maybe some new dials on the ALT range. A GMT function on the diver or MB would be cool. If I had to shoot for the moon, a hand-wound slow-beat classic British marine observer’s watch would be on my list.
