View Full Version : Anyone up for a flying visit??

Jake and I plan to do some flying together and he came up with the idea that we might pay a call on likeminded Bremont enthusiasts. If anyone lives near a smallish airfield (where landing fees will hopefully be cheap!) please get in touch and we will see what can be done regarding a visit.

Unlike our high flying, jet driving, friends 'across the pond' we are somewhat challenged by our groundspeed so an airport within a reasonable radius of Herefordshire would be ideal.

Ground speed? I had 120IAS and 64GS today - FL50.

Well, hopefully we will be doing better that a friend who took this photo at 4500 ft over May Hill while on an instrument training sortie!

Oh, wow. That's quite impressive! What aircraft was it, Seneca?

It was a Robin but not often one sees a ground speed of 0 knots on the GNS 430!

Zero on the 430 and 5 on the DME. Bonkers, indeed!

What about a flying visit to Sleap airfield just north of Shrewsbury? There's a cafe and fine views and I'll bring my 'C along!!

Only 20 or so minutes North Rich, I'm sure we could manage that.

Excellent!! This is the link to the airfield:

I've no idea what's a good price for landing charges and certainly no pressure to call in - I live nearby so it's easy for me to drive to but it would be great to meet up.

Sleap is a really good idea, spent some time circuit bashing there in my early days as a pilot. I will liaise with Jake re. a date, it would be great to meet up and compare watches, straps etc!

Rich, no problem - it's a lovely place, I went there several times as a student. Super friendly, and reasonably priced.

Gavin: let's see what we come up with re. date. I'm sure we could work a time that works for all!

Keep me informed on when you are doing this. Shrewsbury is only a short hop south of Nantwich, so if I'm able to willl try to be there.

That would be really good David, I was thinking of a weekend, I guess you are working on Saturdays so a Sunday would be better?

From this, it seems Sleap is an ideal place?

That Sleap already is known to you guys makes it seem ideal (and they do a great sausage sandwich and mug of tea). A weekend would be best for me too but not fussed about Saturday/Sunday so happy to go with what's best for everyone (btw... d'you reckon Nick or Giles might call in???!!!)

Thanks Gavin. A Sunday would be best for me as I work every Saturday. Alternatively it isn't too far to all pile in to Nantwich (by bus, not your plane - there isn't a long enough straight bit on Pillory Street!)

While I have every confidence in Jake's 'short field' landing technique I think we will use a proper runway rather than Pillory Street If you don't mind!

I'll drop Giles a message, and see what they say.

I know you get a Cessna in to pretty much anywhere these days, but that sounds 'interesting.'

This is the sort of Cessna we need for some serious visiting not to mention the odd lunch in Nice!

Citation Bravo taking off from Staverton in dense fog earlier today!

I would propose my weekday 'home' of RAF Brize Norton, but the base has few redeeming features, other than the exit gate... ;-)

Again, not too far to go, and it'd be a nice one 'for the logbook.' Any idea what their rules on General Aviation movements are?

Well, the public internet page for Brize has the aerodrome manual links to here:

Operations phone numbers are listed, for further info.

Hi Rich - Jake and I are planning to fly up to Sleap next Saturday to arrive around 12 noon. It would be really nice if you could meet us up there, plus anyone else who might live not too far away!

Does this mean we'll need a secret handshake? Or shall I just wear my Bremont cap?

Sunray02
02-07-2015, 05:13 PM
You raise an interesting point Jake - there must be some Masons who wear Bremont watches, unlike Rotarians they do not wear badges which makes identification tricky! As for next saturday your cap will do fine, I will bring mine as well!

Gavin

RedsBluesGreens
02-07-2015, 05:26 PM
Sounds like a plan, Gavin.

Or we could do some watchspotting to see who is who? What're you bringing along, Rich?

SuperRichieM
02-07-2015, 06:36 PM
But don't the Masons have codes like one trouser leg rolled up or something? In my case (in the absense of a Bremont cap) a left sleeve rolled up to reveal a ALT1-C will be the subtle giveaway!

Weather is looking Ok for Saturday Rich, I have sent you a pm with my mobile phone number should you need to contact us. Looking forward to seeing your ALT1-C!!

See you tomorrow, Rich. Looking forward to meeting you!
